Oak, Sky and Earth

On my way to Peter’s Woods Nature Reserve in Northumberland County, I noticed this beautiful Oak tree standing in a farm field used for corn. It stands at the top of a hill that overlooks forest and farmlands in the distance. The separation of the tree from the field, allows the sky to dominate the picture space. Every time I pass by this location, I make photographs of the tree hoping for an interesting sky and good light. On this cold winter day, I found a layer of blue sky as well as dark sky above, creating interest. In the valley below the tree there was also fog, as the cold January day created a hoar frost. This beautiful lonesome tree although elegant in its’ structure and beauty, makes me sad because of its lonely nature separated somehow from other trees. It’s presence somehow is a gift and welcome’s me to the beautiful forest of Peter’s Woods just down the road.
